Overcoming Headshot Fear

Overcoming Headshot Fear

You're Not Alone: Almost Everyone Dreads the Camera

Most people have a bit of anxiety over having their picture taken. We all have those horrendous driver's license and passport photos. I bet even Kim Kardashian has a couple. The camera can be cruel, but it can also be your friend. Bad lighting, bad hair, a photographer not giving you time to put on your game-day face — all of these contribute to a photo you really wish you didn't have to live with for the four years before your license renews.

But getting your headshot taken doesn't have to be a bad experience. That's why I work hard to make you feel comfortable and confident, and why I sweat all the technical details that separate a good headshot from an outstanding one.

I'll cover all the elements of a great headshot in this post and future ones. Here, I'll focus on the essential one: a great expression that shows the best you.

It Starts With the Right Expression

How do I capture a genuine expression, one that conveys what you want to be recognized for by employers, casting agents, and clients?

Ingredient #1: Confidence

First, you have to feel confident: good about your hair, your makeup and grooming, and the clothing choices you made for your shoot. I'll help you with all of these. What looks good in three dimensions in a crowded room may not look as good in two dimensions on a web page. My experience, attention to detail, and eye for aesthetics let me guide your choices. Simple is best. The focus should be on your face and your personality.

Ingredient #2: A Relaxed You

The second ingredient is a relaxed you. This may happen immediately, or it may take a little time. Honestly, I think a good headshot photographer is part therapist. I know how to build your confidence and put you in a good, fun mood. Shooting tethered gives you immediate feedback and reinforces the moments when you're knocking it out of the park. And the experience should really be fun!

Ingredient #3: A Photographer Who's Genuinely Invested in You

Last but not least, you deserve a photographer who is genuinely interested in you and invested in making you look your very best. That's exactly what I aim to be.

Stay tuned for more posts on the other ingredients for a smashing headshot experience.

Still feeling unsure? The best first step is a relaxed conversation, with no camera involved. Let's talk about what you're looking for.
